Water Cycle Transfer Processes

  • Accumulation: The process of water collecting as a liquid or solid on the surface of the Earth
  • Condensation: The process by which water vapor in the atmosphere gathers together to form liquid (rain) or solid (snow)
  • Evaporation: The process of water changing from a liquid to water vapor
  • Infiltration: The process of water moving from the land surface, through the soil and into the groundwater
  • Precipitation: The process of water falling from the atmosphere to the Earth. (rain, sleet, snow, hail)
  • Sublimation: The process of water changing from a solid (snow or ice) directly into water vapor (gas)
  • Surface Runoff: Water moving from the land surface directly into rivers, streams, lakes and oceans
  • Transpiration: The process by which water is taken up from the soil by plant roots, transported through the plant, and evaporated into the air through tiny openings in the leaves to become water vapor
